Myopia Management

Myopia Experience That Matters

I have been in practice for more than 28 years in Naperville. Many of my patients who have come to me as children are now grown up adults in colleges and some in employment. When their parents asked me what can be done to control the progression of Myopia I had nothing to offer them then. I am excited to offer the new technology to new patients who are still in their growing phase. In North America the incidence of Myopia is slated to be more than 50% by the end of this decade.

Recent thinking about Myopia has changed. It is no longer considered just an inherited problem from parents and that nothing can be done about it other than wearing traditional glasses and contact lenses. I am myself guilty of telling patients earlier that nothing can be done to control the progression of Myopia since it is just an aging phenomenon like gaining height for example. That is no longer the case. Research proves that Myopia in children can be controlled. Myopia is actually a problem in the developed world. What children do as they grow up also contributes to their Myopia getting worse and worse and not just what they inherited from their parents.

Children Myopia

Myopia or nearsightedness in children is considered a disease, an epidemic right now. It is not enough for children diagnosed with nearsightedness, to just get glasses and contacts and move on. They need Myopia Management. They need to be under the supervision of a Myopia management certified doctor.

Myopia Management

We do Myopia management at Maxivision Eye Care. If you have nearsightedness and/or your spouse has nearsightedness then your children have a higher probability to also have Myopia. Not only Myopia is inherited but also the environment they grow up in affects its severity. Why is that important? It is important because we can do something about it. We are excited to offer new specialty contact lenses like Misight one day to control the progression of Myopia. Other methods like orthokeratology are also highly effective in controlling the progression of Myopia. Please contact Maxivison for details.

Myopia

If allowed to grow without trying to control its progression, is not good for the children’s eyes. The risks of retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy, glaucoma and other problems are higher with high Myopia. An eye with no or small myopia and one with high Myopia are not the same. So controlling the myopic progression is good for long term health of children’s eyes.
